🇬🇧The Dance of the Ogopuus of Elderwood

In Ashura’s tavern, especially on nights when Sifuu has drunk a little too much of the famous clam wine, it is said that in the depths of Elderwood live the ogopuus.

These plump, bouncy creatures resemble enchanted cushions. Their fur is so soft that children dream of turning it into pillows, and it is said their plushes are among the most coveted treasures in all of Kilima. Some even whisper that they end up on the black market in Zeki, that Grimalkin who is always ready to sell anything… especially anything that glitters or purrs a little too much to be legal.

Despite their adorable appearance, ogopuus are anything but docile. Anyone who gets too close quickly discovers their habit: they spit a thick, sticky mud as soon as they see a silhouette, then dash off in a chaotic escape, zigzagging left and right, their front paws raised like panicked little dancers. The spectacle is so ridiculous that it causes more laughter than fear. But beware: anyone who laughs at their dance offends the waters of Elderwood, and their nets will return empty.
The elders insist that this flight is not a silly panic but an offering. Each zigzag echoes the river’s ripples, each desperate leap the wave that rises and falls. “Ogopuus do not run,” they say, “they imitate the waves.” Believe it or not, it is a lesson few hunters forget.

Then there is Delaïla, the wife of Badruu the farmer, who claims that this slime has a thousand virtues: “Perfect for gluing shoe soles,” she says as she patches her husband’s boot for the fourth time. No one has ever dared to check whether Badruu limps because of hunting or his wife’s “remedies,” but everyone nods politely.

Yet despite the mud-spitting and absurd zigzags, the hunters persist. For behind this living farce lie the legendary star scales, so rare they shimmer like pieces of sky fallen beneath the ferns.

So the storytellers always conclude, raising their mug of clam wine:
“Admire their dance, respect their slime, and remember: in Elderwood, it is never man who has the last word, but the water.”
